Chapters 19 and 20 Summary

Chapter 19

Dr. Milligan shows Galen and Emma her chest x-ray. Emma has a rib-cage and only a thin layer of bone-plating. Syrena have no rib cage, only plating. Dr. Milligan guesses this variance could be because she lived on land all her life. She asks Dr. Milligan why she can communicate with the fish. He thinks it's her tone more than her words. Emma tells Dr. Milligan that her father was a doctor. Why didn't he or her pediatrician notice the bone-plating? Looking at the x-rays again, Dr. Milligan determines that Emma is not human but she is not Syrena either - she is both.
