Chapters 3 and 4 Summary

When Leah tells her mother, Pauline, about Shar, her mother says she's been robbed on her own doorstep by a crack-addicted gypsy. Pauline asks what Michel said, pronouncing his name Michelle. Leah says he wants to go looking for her to get the money back.

Pauline blames Leah being gullible on her being an only child. Pauline also blames the problems on the foreigners in England. Pauline asks to speak to Michel. The only thing the two connect on is Leah's mistakes. Leah goes down to the communal hammock to smoke marijuana with their neighbor Ned.

Michel, Leah and their dog Olive are enjoying croissants at a local pastries' shop. The man at the counter is wearing a turban. Michel is talking about a clinic. Leah points out Shar to Michel as Shar buys a pack of cigarettes in the shop...
