Lillian Breaker

Lillian Breaker is the novel’s protagonist and narrator. She is 28 years old at the time of the main narrative. She is originally from a small town in Tennessee. She grew up in a poor household and was raised by an unloving single mother. As a child, she was a high achiever and even received a scholarship to attend an upscale preparatory boarding school. At the school, she became best friends with her roommate, Madison. However, when Madison was caught with drugs, Madison’s father bribed Lillian’s mother to shift the blame to Lillian, so Lillian was expelled instead of Madison. Lillian was hurt by this betrayal, and it ruined her future prospects. However, she did not want to give up her relationship with Madison, so they stayed in touch via mail over the following years.
