A highly prolific writer before she succumbed to cancer in 1992 at the age of fiftyone, Angela Carter put her dazzling imagination and extremely sharp wit to good use. Her works range from modern-day folktale through satire to political polemic.

She has a lengthy list of publications, including novels, short stories, poems, essays, reviews, and translations.

Carter's 1977 futuristic fantasy The Passion of New Eve similarly treats the problematic concepts of masculinity and femininity in depth. This novel's protagonist, Evelyn, is a male chauvinist who is surgically transformed into a woman by the Amazonian tribe who has captured him. Learning to perform "woman" in order to survive, his/ her eyes are opened to the damage that is done to the entire human race by reductive cultural myths of gender.
