The majority of the novel is woven around Fevvers, her experiences and transitions through life. Fevvers is an exciting character whose only consistency is her intrigue. Fevvers is called by many names throughout the novel and takes on different forms to each person she encounters. Her foster mother, Lizzie, calls her Fevvers. For Lizzie, she is the daughter in need of nurturing and guidance in a corrupt and unfair world. Walser notably doesn't call her by name until the end of the first book, when he calls her "Miss Sophie."
