Drugs and Alternate States of Mind

Nearly all of the characters in Neuromancer are drug users and drug peddlers, and many of them are drug addicts. Alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical drugs are pervasive. Drug addiction plays a major role in character motivation and plot development. Case's natural cyberspace talent is destroyed by a drug, and thereafter he turns to a life of drug use and dealing. Case's life in Night City is defined by drug use. He meets Linda Lee and woos her with drugs, which destroy her mind and their fledgling relationship.
