1948: In the aftermath of World War II, Japan is occupied by American forces. American occupation arms to put in place a democratic form of government and reestablish a successful and stable peacetime economy. Under the supervision of General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of Occupying Forces, Japanese war criminals are tried and convicted; democratic elections are held in 1946; and a new constitution goes into effect in 1947. However, economic reforms are more difficult to implement and it will take years for Japan to stabilize their economy.

Today: Japan remains a stable democratic power in the South Pacific and is a staunch ally of the United States. Despite recent economic setbacks, Japan is also a formidable economic power in the world community.
