Lagos

Lagos is the most populous city in Nigeria. The entirety of the novel takes place in Lagos. Korede and her family live in Lagos, and Korede works at a hospital in Lagos. With this specific setting, the novel seeks to interrogate patriarchal social structures that often characterize African cultures, as well as other cultures. For example, the many abuses wrought by Korede’s father were protected and enabled by the unjust patriarchal privileges granted to him.

Korede lives in a house in Lagos with her mother and sister. The family appears to be financially comfortable, as the house is described as being fairly large. Korede and Ayoola have lived in that house since their childhood, and they unfortunately have many bad memories associated with it.
