Jamie Matthews is just turning ten when the novel begins. Jamie lives with his father and sister Jas. Jamie once had another sister, Rose, but she was killed five years prior to the opening of the novel in a terrorist attack. Jamie barely remembers Rose, but his parents and sister continue to grieve her deeply.

Jamie and his family has just moved to a new place and Jamie has to start a new school. Jamie dislikes the school because he is bullied by other students.
