Chapters 21-25 Summary and Analysis

A message arrives from the maharajah and Bram goes to meet him. The maharajah tells Bram that he has received a letter from Mr. North after the man heard the stories about the elephant that had saved so many from death at sea. Mr. North wants his elephant, and also wrote that Bram is a liar and a thief. The maharajah tells Bram that Modoc is now under his protection and to allow her to be taken would be a question of his honor. Bram is stunned, but the maharajah tells Bram that if someone were to sneak the elephant out at night there would be nothing he could do. Bram understands, and makes plans to leave. Sabu brings Bram the things he will need while traveling in India and a message arrives from Jagrat to meet that evening...
