Chapters 1-2 Summary

Lucas Davenport is a deputy chief of the Minneapolis Police Department. Lucas is also a successful game designer with a company, Davenport Simulations. Due to this, Lucas is wealthier than most cops and drives a very expensive car, causing him to stick out to most cops and criminals. Lucas, a life-long womanizer, is in a committed relationship with a surgeon and has recently bought an engagement ring that he carries around in his pocket all day and keeps in his sock drawer each night.

In chapter 1, John Mail takes a boat out into Lake Minnetonka where he knows Andi Manette has a home on the shore. Mail pretends to be fishing, but he only sits all day and watches Andi's house, remembering the fantasies he had when he was a boy and she was his psychiatrist.
