Alzheimer's Disease

This is the disease Lolo has that accounts for his strange behavior. It is a symbol of the inevitability of the changes he is experiencing. The disease also symbolizes that Merci's relationship with Lolo will change. She has been dependent on him to help her talk through her problems but knows there will come a time when he is no longer able to recognize her, let alone help her.

The Sunshine Buddies

The Sunshine Buddies is a club at Seaward that symbolizes the adults' view of how students should be acting toward each other. Merci considers the club a ridiculous tradition. Merci spends a lot of time trying to get out of the club despite the fact that Edna loves being in it and that Miss McDaniels says it is an honor to be chosen.
