Summary

Matigari and Gũthera go back in the bar and Gũthera thanks him. She tells a story about a young girl who loved her earthly and heavenly fathers equally and who aspired to do no ill in life. When the war breaks out, her earthly father becomes a patriot and is one day arrested after having been found carrying bullets in his bible. The prison superintendent offers to spare the father’s life if the girl gives him her virginity. The girl refuses and the man is killed, his land confiscated. The girl realizes that the ten commandments say nothing about poverty and hungry, and becomes a prostitute. She will sleep with anyone except a policeman. Gũthera tells Matigari to look for his wife in the plantation fields.
