Book One, Jamie 1883-1906: Chapters 9-11 Summary
Jamie treats his marriage as one of convenience, never acknowledging Margaret as his wife inside the home. Jamie spends all his free time with Jamie, Jr., taking him fishing and camping, devoted to the child. Jamie learns from Banda, who has settled down on a small farm and had two children, that there is trouble between the natives and the overseer on his diamond beach. Jamie sends David Blackwell, a young American he is grooming to be his manager, to the beach to work out the problem. David finds the overseer to be cruel and dangerous, and warns him to change his ways or lose his job.
