Summary

In Book 1, Chapter 8, Sebastian is scheduled for concerts in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Lucy goes to Sebastian’s studio to bid him farewell, but she finds that the only one in the studio is James Mockford. Lucy feels intimidated by Mockford, and Mockford’s attitude seems to be blasé and slightly haughty. Sebastian arrives, and Lucy bids him farewell. As Lucy leaves, she feels hurt and embarrassed by Mockford, but she feels more strongly than ever that she is developing feelings for Sebastian. In the streets, Lucy notices many people who seem discouraged and downtrodden, and she feels a sense of companionship with them. In Chapter 9, Lucy is ecstatic when Sebastian returns ten days later and asks to resume rehearsing with Lucy.
