JoLayne Lucks is a beautiful black woman who lives in Grange, Florida. JoLayne has experienced bad luck with men for most of her life. On Saturdays, JoLayne often plays the lottery. She uses numbers that correspond with the age she was when she had a particularly bad relationship. When JoLayne wins the lottery with these numbers, she is not particularly overjoyed. She is happy to discover however that she will finally be able to buy the stretch of wilderness near her home that she enjoys exploring.

When someone breaks into JoLayne's house and forces her to tell where the lottery ticket is, JoLayne refuses to sit back and allow them to steal all her hopes and dreams.
