Rivalry and Support Among Siblings

In the beginning of the book, Jared Grace is hurt and feels isolated by his siblings. He wants to keep the Field Guide but Simon and Mallory want to return it to the Fantastical World. Jared seems to be especially shocked that his own twin sides against him.

Despite their differing opinions, they allow each other to state their own defense for or against the book. Mallory and Simon decide to consider Jared's proposal to ask an adult who may have a knowledgeable opinion about what to do with the Field Guide.

After Lucinda tells them to leave the house to protect their family, Mallory and Simon appear more convinced to get rid of the book. They start fighting in the asylum and Jared almost hits Mallory. Their rivalry is noticed by their mom who drives them home in angry silence.
