Book 2, Chapter 1 Summary

After four nights and three days, Frodo wakes up in a bed in Rivendell to see Gandalf sitting by his bed. Gandalf explains that he was late because he was held captive, though he does not say anything further about his imprisonment.

Gandalf then explains to Frodo that the Black Riders are the nine Ringwraiths who are under the control of Sauron and that Strider and the rest of the Rangers are Men of the West or NĂºmenoreans. Frodo asks if the Riders were killed in the Ford, but Gandalf tells him that only their horses were killed; the Wraiths cannot be killed that easily.

Continuing the tale of everything that Frodo missed, Gandalf tells Frodo that, while he was asleep, Elrond removed a shard of a Morgul-knife that would have turned Frodo.....
