Summary

One day, Joseph meets F.W. Bennett when Bennett asks him and other workmen to dig around an exposed boulder. Bennett is characterized by a relatively manic energy, which Joseph finds likeable. Bennett then calls Joseph inside and explains that the rock is potentially part of a Native American burial structure. Joseph is surprised by this sudden attention from Bennett. Bennett offers to employ Joseph, but Joseph says that he does not want to live at Loon Lake indefinitely. Bennett respects Joseph’s decision and advises him to find his calling in life. Bennett gives his personal phone number to Joseph. Joseph goes to talk to Warren about Clara. Warren says that Clara’s recent boyfriend was Thomas Crapo, a powerful gangster.
