Chapter 36 Summary

Joan reaches the balcony, and goes into the flat. She thinks momentarily of escaping, but decides to defend herself instead. She grabs the empty wine bottle, and crouches behind the door. As she waits, she thinks perhaps she is incorrect, and realizes she has spent too much time in life behind closed doors.

In her mind, Joan imagines Felicia entering the maze, and walking to the middle. On a bench sits four women, two of whom look like herself, one middle-aged woman with a fur around her neck, and one extremely heavy woman in pink tights. Felicia is surprised, and asks the identity of the women. They reply they are Lady Redmond. Felicia is taken aback, and asks why the women cannot get back to the outside world.
