Chapter 33 Summary

Joan believes the situation is a conspiracy, hatched even from her arrival. She knows she cannot ask for gasoline, since no one in town sells the product. She thinks if she accepts the offer of the house, she will become a prisoner. She is awakened in the night by footsteps outside her window, and is frightened, but sees it is only her mother. She is dressed in the same navy suit, and is crying. Joan confronts her, and her mother reaches toward her. Joan finds herself longing to console her, and walks outside. Awake now, she realizes she is outside, and returns to bed. She also realizes her mother has never let go, because Joan herself has never let go of her mother. She knows her mother was the woman in the mirror.....
