Chapter 29 Summary
In the morning, Joan phones Sam, speaking cryptically to arouse his interest. She says she has to see him, and knows Marlene will be with him. She meets them at a designated point, only to tell them to meet her elsewhere. During the second meeting, Joan tells the couple the authorities have found the dynamite, and are following her. She claims the authorities may be Mounties, or may be CIA. Marlene suggests they get Joan out of the country, and she agrees, but notes the need for secrecy. She tells them her plan to stage her own death, showing them a recent news clipping of a woman who drowns in a local lake, and was pronounced dead, even without a body. She tells the couple they should not tell Arthur, since he is a terrible liar, and would reveal the truth under pressure. Sam and Marlene agree to help, and...
