Chapter 23 Summary
When Joan gives Arthur a copy of her book, he does not respond, but instead becomes distant and cold. After talking with Sam, Joan learns Arthur thinks the book is an attack on his and Joan's marriage. Sam talks to Arthur, and although he is still clearly disturbed by the book, he becomes more responsive. In the meantime, Joan has her first television appearance. When pressed for her inspiration for the novel, Joan admits to her automatic writing activities, clearly dumbfounding the cocky interviewer. However, Joan immediately regrets the remarks, knowing Arthur will not approve. The publishers, however, are elated, since the story is interesting enough to sell more copies of the book.
During a party to celebrate Joan's book release, she meets an artist, the Royal Porcupine. He invites her home with him, and when she refuses, invites her instead to his art show opening, which she accepts. They...
