Chapter 17 Summary

Joan exits the flat again quickly, and wonders how her mother has located her in England. She notes her mother is wearing a navy-blue suit and gloves, and is crying. Suddenly, Joan realizes the image is her mother's astral body, as seen by Leda Sprott. When Joan reenters the flat, the image is gone, and Joan rearranges the furniture. Five days later, Joan receives a telegram that her mother has passed away, and realizes the image in the flat had been her mother's way of showing her death. Joan tells Arthur she must return to Canada, but realizes she has no money. She goes to the library and writes the rest of her latest novel by hand, submitting it for payment. She has enough for a ticket to Canada, and returns home.

She arrives.....
