Chapter 16 Summary

Joan remembers her first meeting with Arthur, in Hyde Park in 1963. She is walking in the park to gain inspiration for a heroine, Samantha, in her latest book, who is running through a park to escape Sir Edmond. In the novel, Samantha is approached while sewing in the schoolroom by Sir Edmond, who is disheveled and clearly animalistic. He grabs her and demands that she take pity on him, but she stabs his face with her needle, and runs. She runs through the park, and hears a hoarse voice whisper her name.

At this point, Joan feels a hand on her arm and screams, finding herself suddenly entangled with a thin man with glasses who is handing out fliers. She realizes she has cut him in their fall, and refuses bystander's offers to.....
