Chapter 14 Summary

Joan remembers meeting her first lover, the Polish Count, Paul, in England. Joan falls from a bus, and Paul helps her up and takes her for tea, then takes her to her damp, impoverished rented room, where he wraps her swollen ankle. As he does so, Joan's proprietor comes in and gives her notice, stating that he cannot have "that" sort of activity in his boarding house. Paul offers to take her to the Tower of London the following day. As they travel, he tells her of his life as an upper class citizen in Poland prior to the Russian invasion. Following the invasion, however, he escaped by ski to England, nearly losing his life along the way. He has left his mother and daughter in Poland and Joan finds herself admiring his.....
