Chapter 10 Summary
Joan remembers Lou inviting her to dinner one Sunday to meet Robert, Lou's lover. Following the meal, Lou invites Joan to church, surprising her since Lou is not religious. The church is actually a house, in which mediums give messages from beyond the grave to members of the congregation as they meditate. As Spiritualists, the group believes mediums can transfer these messages to loved ones. One evening the medium, Leda Sprott, gives Joan an urgent message from a woman wearing a blue suit and gloves, stating she is disappointed. Joan knows this to be her mother, but also knows her mother to be alive. Following the service, Joan confronts Leda, who explains the presence must have been her mother's astral body.
