Courage or Valor is the main theme in the story. Zoe is the third of the triad to fight against Kane to retrieve the third key and set free the Daughters of Glass. As with the other women, Zoe receives clues that lead to the things she will have to do to conquer Kane in addition to facing old and new fears and demons.

Rowena reads the scroll, which begins, "'Beauty and truth,' she read, 'are lost without the courage to hold them.
