Summary

Devin gets his first taste of the Carolina Spin under the careful watch of Lane Hardy. Hardy requests that Devin take a ride on the Carolina Spin to ensure that he wants the job. Devin takes the ride and accepts the job.

Devin meets Erin and Tom Kennedy, two fellow employees at Joyland. The trio hits it off immediately, and it is obvious that they will become life-long friends.

Devin begins work and is amazed at the number of people that walk through Joyland’s gate. The day is long and Devin is very hesitant about putting the lives of patrons in his hands as he operates the Carolina Spin for the first time. Throughout the day, Devin becomes more comfortable but still cautious and wary.
