Summary

The Prologue is written from Hazel’s point of view. She tells readers why Josh would never date her. Her stories go back to their college days, when they first met. She knew she wanted to be his friend, which meant that she could never sleep with him. After he graduates, she does not see him again for seven years, and she has not changed.

Chapter 1 is told from Hazel’s point of view. It is now seven years later. Hazel is a third-grade teacher. It is the end of the school year and Hazel is packing up her classroom when he best friend, Emily, arrives and reminds her of the barbecue she is having at her house. It will give Hazel the opportunity to meet teachers at Emily’s school, where Hazel hopes she will be teaching when the new school...
