Summary

Part 1, Chapter 1 opens in the reception area of the office of Dr. Billings, a gastroenterologist. Megan—who is 24 years old—and Jillian—who is 35 years old—work as administrative assistants in the office. Megan dislikes the job but feels no motivation to find something else. Meanwhile, Jillian says that she loves the job, but she often talks about other professions. After work, Megan returns to her apartment where she lives with her boyfriend, Randy. Megan complains to Randy about her job and about Jillian, whom Megan finds annoying. The next day at work, Jillian tells Megan of her (Jillian’s) plan to adopt a dog. Jillian then receives a phone call, which Megan partially overhears.
