Point of View

The point-of-view of the novel is essential to its very heart. At first glance, the book seems to alternate between two separate and distinct first-person narrators: Emmie, a shy and quiet girl who loves art, and Katie, a beautiful and popular girl who everyone loves. However, when the novel concludes Emmie reveals that Katie is a cartoon character she created for her comic strip.

Although Katie is actually a part of Emmie, and her point of view is a construction designed by Emmie, the two point of views read like different narrators for the entirety of the first read. And, as such, both point of views have their own distinct narrative voices. Emmie’s narrative style is funny, humble, and self-deprecating: “So yeah, if you haven’t guessed, I’m pretty quiet” (7).
