Summary

Part II is titled “Summer.” The following page shows a photo of the woman Neil identified as Ella Bounds in her wheelchair in a breezeway at Carville. In Chapter 6, Neil began work at 4 a.m. He had trouble sleeping because inmates loudly played dominoes until late in the night and a light shone in his face all night. Neil had expected to discover coveted contraband to be drugs or alcohol, but discovered it was actually food. Fruit was served only to the patients, making it a valuable commodity. Neil discovered the others assigned to work in the kitchen slept in the cooler all morning. Neil made coffee and offered some to Ella as she arrived.
