Epilogue Summary

The Consul wakes up to Hoyt playing a balalaika. Soon the others join them. They are early for the start of their journey but decide to proceed. They leave all their luggage except whatever they desire to have when meeting the Shrike.

Lamia leads the group as they exit Chronos Keep and make their way towards the City of Poets. They pass it and head towards the Tombs; each Tomb glows in the sky. It was not a common sight, and Weintraub says that the glowing was never reported during Rachel's studies there.

No one speaks as they grow closer, except for Weintraub humming a tune to Rachel. It's a pre-Hegira, pre-everything song from a flat film about going to see a wizard in Oz. They all began singing now, walking side by side, as they go further and further down the valley...
