Part 5, Second Half (Carl, Virgina, Saul, Carl) Summary

Carl is examining the equipment for the Nudge. They test the devices, which function well. Arcists suddenly appear and begin firing lasers at them from long distance. Carl has Jeffers tip one of the launchers to use as a machine gun. He contacts Quiverian, who insists he cannot control the people attacking the launchers.

Virginia goes to see Carl after the Arcist attack. He asks her to protect the arrival of the care package with the mechs. She tells him that she knows the attempt to orbit Mars will destroy the comet. Carl explains that the collision will not happen for another forty years, and that it will ultimately bring life to Mars. She agrees to protect the care package, and agrees that his plan to collide with Mars is likely...
