Summary

Kim continues to achieve in her classes by staying up nearly all night after working at the factory. She knows that she will need to go to college, too. Although she is working hard in school and at the factory, Kim has hardly any time for social outings with friends. Still, though, she continues to have feelings for Matt. Matt makes “half-flirtatious remarks” that thrill Kim, but also make her even more uncomfortable around Matt. Still, despite Matt’s remarks and regular touches, Kim does not tell him how she feels since she does not know that this “was what love felt like.”

Matt starts dating a girl named Vivian, who he met working at her father’s clothing shop. After they start dating, Matt is still kind to Kim, but she feels as though there is “a new absentmindedness to him.”
