Part 2: Chapters 9-11 Summary

Days Colored Black. Malcolm punishes six-year-old Mal for playing the piano after he told him not to, causing Alicia to look down on Olivia for not protecting her child better. When Christopher turns three, Alicia throws a child-friendly party that Olivia believes will upset Malcolm, but she is surprised to find him treating Alicia with partiality, as though drawn to her like the children for whom the party was thrown. That night, Olivia is drawn to the Swan Room by screams. Olivia finds Garland unconscious on the floor and Malcolm disheveled. After the doctor comes and pronounces Garland dead, Alicia tells Olivia that Garland and Malcolm fought after Malcolm came into her bedroom and began to force himself on her. It was the fight that caused Garland's fatal heart attack. Olivia confronts Malcolm, but he blames the entire episode...
