Chapters 1 and 2 Summary

Chapter 1: The Unvanquished Truth

Max begins his story by declaring that he did not have a brain until he connected with the Freak in the eighth grade. From a very young age, Max is raised by his grandparents. His mother is dead and his father is not on the scene. The grandparents have problems with the aggressiveness of Max and place him in a pre-school with kids his age. That is where he first meets the Freak, a crippled young boy in braces. Max is impressed with the gutsy Freak who tells everyone he is really a robot. Freak suddenly stops coming to the pre-school and Max does not see him again until third grade when he catches a glimpse of him on the short bus.
