On March 15, Charlie is out of the hospital but not back at work. He is frustrated that nothing seems to be happening, and Algernon keeps beating him at the maze. He hates that stupid mouse, and he hates the mazes. He also gets headaches from trying to remember. Dr. Strauss had said he would help Charlie, but he will not tell him what to think.

The next day, Charlie eats lunch with Burt at the college restaurant. He watches the students. Burt says they are talking about art, religion and politics. Charlie hopes he can talk about those things soon. The students give him a funny look and he almost tells them he will be smart soon, but Burt stops him. He says Professor Nemur does not want to be laughed at.....
