Chapter 6: The Eggs Summary
Juli was very upset about the eggs. It was more difficult to deal with than her dog's death. Her father had found the dog when she was six. It was hurt and abandoned. Juli's mother didn't want to keep the dog but after a while she softened and the dog, named Champ, became a part of the family but he had to stay outside because he persistently made his "mark" inside the house. It was in fifth grade that Juli became involved with raising chickens. Her teacher encouraged her to raise a hatchling for the science fair. Her father volunteered to help her build an incubator.
After the incubator was assembled, Juli placed six fertilized eggs inside. Her teacher told her not to expect all six to live—the record at the science fair was three. Her documentation of the project was what was important even if none of the...
