Book 2: Chapter 9 Summary

The company travels the River for long days; they see birds, but no other living creatures. The group is moving southward on their journey. On the fourth day of their journey, Sam sees something that catches his eye, but he cannot resolve what he sees as being real and thinks he is dreaming. Sam tells Frodo that he dreamt that he saw a log in the water with eyes and wide paddling feet and the log was following them. Frodo tells him he must have been dreaming. That night, Sam sees something again, wakes Frodo, and shows him, but the log is not to be seen when Frodo looks. Frodo takes over the watch and Sam goes to sleep.
