Book 2: Chapter 5 Summary

The group travel lower into the mountain and pass through yet another chamber. Gandalf finds a book inside the chamber and it appears to be a record of Balin's relations. Gimli realizes that they are in the Chamber of Records.

Gandalf reads the book to the others. It is a history of the fall of the Dwarves to the Orcs. It was recorded just before the Orcs attacked them. The Dwarves were trapped in the Chamber of Records and all were slain there, including Balin himself. Suddenly the Fellowship hears drumbeats beneath them and they wonder what direction out they should take when suddenly one of doors is broken down. The group manages to close them out and Gandalf frightens them back long enough to realize that there are many and they.....
