Book 1: Chapter 1 Summary

Bilbo Baggins announces to his friends and family in Hobbiton his plans for a large birthday party to be given in honor of his one-hundred and eleventh birthday. Bilbo's young cousin Frodo, whom he adopted after his parents had died, shares the same birth date and so, the party is to be a celebration for both of them. Frodo is to be thirty-three, which is the "coming of age" birthday for Hobbits, as they usually live long and healthy lives.

Hobbiton is very interested in Mr. Bilbo Baggins, as he is rumored to have had many adventures with strange groups of people, such as Dwarves and Elves. Hobbits are not known to have adventures and do not usually socialize with people other than their own kind. Therefore, Bilbo is thought to be.....
