At Nikolskoe Arkady courts Katya in earnest but as yet had not declared his love for her. Arkady is pleased that Katya is a girl who likes to obey yet feels that she is on Arkady's level, which makes for a good love match. Arkady especially appreciates the fact that Katya is independent like her sister, Anna, but is more reserved with her emotions about it. Katya resists any comparisons to Anna because of Anna's great beauty and style but Arkady reassures Katya that she has more character than Anna does.
Arkady finally tells Katya that he puts her above anyone else in the world. This revelation embarrasses the shy Arkady who leaves immediately to go to his room. On the way, Arkady is met by a servant who announces that Bazarov.....
