Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 Summary

Only a young girl and a man of about sixty years meet the arrival of the carriage at the farm. Nikolai announces that supper will be served immediately and asks if Arkady and Bazarov would like to wash after the journey. Pavel Petrovitch Kirsanov, Nikolai's brother who has been living on the farm for five years, greets the young men. Pavel is dressed impeccably and conducts himself with a noble bearing due to his days of living in the city.

Dinner conversation is stilted due to Pavel's abrupt manners and disdain for any of the arts or culture of the old Russian society. When the two young men retire to their rooms, Bazarov makes fun of Pavel's dress and manicured hands. Arkady defends his uncle and asks Bazarov to show.....
