New York City

New York City is where Lucia, Miranda, Manny, and Yonah live most of their lives in America. Lucia seems to feel the most free while here. It is also where she meets Yonah at his health food store. After they marry, they move into Yonah's apartment adjacent to the shop.

Though Miranda moves to Providence, Boston, and later Switzerland, she ultimately returns to the city, needing the old exhilarating atmosphere and the connection to her younger self. Manny also lives in New York in a house with 11 other Ecuadorians. He works in the city for several years, sending money back to his family in Ecuador. He and Lucia meet in New York and begin their relationship.

Essy also moves to New York at the end of the novel to begin college. Here she reconnects with her aunt and begins a new life.
