Summary

In Chapter 14, Mike and Ellie decided to go on calling their house Gypsy’s Acre just to unnerve people. Greta stayed a weekend with them and Ellie enjoyed getting to show the house off to her. They met Major Phillpot, the man whom Mike believed was like God to the people in the nearby village. Phillpot apologized that Mrs. Lee was bothering them with rumors about Gypsy’s Acre. He said he was surprised Mrs. Lee had threatened Ellie instead of giving her a good fortune. Phillpot explained he took care of Mrs. Lee because she had saved his brother when he fell through the ice on a pond. When he heard this story, Mike made a clumsy movement and broke a glass ashtray.
