Part 3, Chapter 40 Summary

Jim watches the American attack and bombers dropping canisters filled with ammunition for the Kuomintang troops, rooting out the last of the Communist troops. Hundreds of dead Communists are stacked like firewood. The Nationalist armies were converging on Shanghai. Following were tens of thousands of Chinese peasant refugees. Jim feared the Chinese refugees the most, armed with knives and hoes, as did Basie's bandit group.

Basie abandons Jim at the Buick, now a target for the Kuomintang gunners. Jim watched Basie head back to the stadium hoping for rich contraband. Jim doubts there is anything left.

Jim is sure now World War II has ended but wondered if World War III has begun. Jim remembers the atomic bomb blast as he wipes his bleeding nose. It has been bleeding now for two weeks......
