Part 3, Chapter 39 Summary

Jim is riding in the car with Basie and six others. They are a gang of bandits and the car is crammed with weapons and ammunition. Once again Jim is viewing the country in the company of Basie, on a survival road trip. Basie is not the leader of the gang and Jim knows he is worth no more than a dog to be worked to death. The leader is a Chinese who doesn't want Jim running errands for him. Jim notices that the war has changed the Chinese; that they look at Europeans as if they no longer existed, even after the British helped the American defeat the Japanese.

Basie had been prepared to watch Jim be killed earlier by the bandits, and it was only Jim's stories of the booty.....
