Part 3, Chapter 38 Summary

Once again Jim is viewing the country from the window of a truck. Lt. Price is following the trail of the parachutes of the food drops. Jim feels strange to be leaving Lunghua again. Once again his newly secure world of spam and magazines falls apart. He realizes once again he is imprisoned by the camp, just as much as he was during the war.

Lt. Price is lured to the stadium with stories of all the loot, as Jim expected. The two men leave Jim behind with the truck as they sneak into the stadium. Jim is thinking of Mr. Maxted and feeling guilty again that he didn't sell his shoes for him. Jim reads a magazine and studies pictures of American marines raising the flag on the summit of Mount.....
